Fethiye is a harbour town in the south of Mugla, built over the ancient city of Telmessos. It is known for the still blue lagoon of Oludeniz, the paragliders launching from Babadag, and a bay ringed by rock-cut tombs. For those coming from the Antalya side there is a long but scenic road, past the bends of Kas and Kalkan and down to the bay through Gocek. Antalya Airport (AYT) is about 200 kilometres and on average 3 hours away; Dalaman Airport is much closer.

Fethiye is both a harbour town and a wide holiday region. The town centre runs along the edge of the bay; fishing boats, a marina and seafood restaurants line the harbour. In the morning the fishermen gather their nets and the fish market sets up. Just above the centre, ancient Lycian tombs cut into the rock look down over the town.
The first place that comes to mind with Fethiye is Oludeniz, about 14 kilometres from the centre. On summer afternoons you see paragliders coming down to Belcekiz beach from Babadag; the sky fills with coloured wings. Beyond the beaches, the area is a centre for nature and adventure as much as for a seaside holiday.
Oludeniz Blue Lagoon and Babadag Paragliding
For most people Fethiye brings to mind two views side by side: the lagoon of Oludeniz and the summit of Babadag.
The Oludeniz Lagoon
Oludeniz takes its name from its still, sheltered water; with its Blue Flag beach and lagoon it is one of the best-known stretches of coast in Turkey. The lagoon is protected within a nature park; its shallow, clear water makes it a calm cove for swimming. Belcekiz beach is busier; the boat trips set off from here, and cafes and restaurants line the shore.
Babadag and Paragliding
Babadag, with its many launch points between 1,969 and 2,365 metres, is one of the world's leading paragliding mountains. In suitable weather flights run all year; with a pilot you glide down towards the Oludeniz lagoon. A cable car also climbs to the summit; it is a spot people go up to for the view even without flying.
Kayakoy and Ancient Traces
Fethiye's past reaches back to ancient Telmessos. In the town centre stand Fethiye Castle and the rock-cut Tomb of Amyntas. Near the centre, Kayakoy tells a different story: a Greek village abandoned in the early 20th century, its stone houses left as they were; walking its silent streets is a way into the region's past. Further inland are Saklikent Gorge and the walking routes of the Lycian Way.
Coves and Boat Trips
The bay of Fethiye is full of coves, most of them with no road access. Butterfly Valley, ringed by steep cliffs and home to more than eighty species of butterfly, is a nature reserve reached only by boat. The coves of Kidrak and Kabak are quieter shores backed by pine forest. The 12 Islands boat trips leaving from Fethiye harbour spend the day touring the coves of the bay, with a swimming stop at each one.
Morning and Evening in Fethiye
In the morning, as the first paragliders launch from Babadag and glide over the bay, the fishermen set up their stalls at the harbour. Through the day the beaches of Oludeniz and Belcekiz fill up while the central market and the fish market grow busy. Towards evening people walk along the harbour and settle into the seafood restaurants as the boats return. Choosing your fish at the market and having it cooked at the table next door is a familiar Fethiye habit.
Which Airport: Antalya or Dalaman?
The closest airport to Fethiye is Dalaman; the distance is about 45-65 kilometres, on average an hour. Antalya Airport is further: about 200 kilometres, on average 3 hours. The road from the Antalya side is long but scenic; it passes the coastal bends of Kas and Kalkan and the pine-covered hills of Gocek before dropping to the bay. On a long drive a break, air conditioning and a driver who knows the road all matter. To be honest, if your flight allows it Dalaman gives a shorter arrival; but if you need to come from Antalya, we make the road a comfortable journey.

How to Get From the Airport to Fethiye
There are a few ways to reach Fethiye:

- Dolmus (minibus): Minibuses run from Fethiye centre to Oludeniz; handy within the area but not suited to a transfer with luggage.
